If there is one thing that ‘Let’s Do It Galway’ - those inspirational people who guided the Volvo Ocean Race into our beautiful Bay- has taught us, and that is that the sea is a resource for possibility and opportunity. For too long Galway, and other coastal towns, have regarded the sea as a source of separation, and a reminder of bad times. In Galway, despite having a wide river flowing through it, and an expansive bay on its shoreline, buildings in general have turned their backs to it.

THE LEGACY of the great Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh will be celebrated through poetry, talks, readings, films, stories, and music during next weekend’s Galway Kavanagh Day.

IN WHAT promises to be one of the highlights of this year’s Cúirt, singer-songwriter Sean Tyrrell will premiere his new show Who Killed James Joyce, inspired by the poems and life-stories of some of Ireland’s foremost poets, both past and present.

In the 19th century Nuns Island was part of the industrial heartland of Galway. The 1911 census tells us that the street comprised two lodging houses, Grace’s Asylum, the Presbyterian Church, a ladies’ school, a fever hospital, Her Majesty’s Prison, a brewery and malt house, St Joseph’s Seminary, two flour mills, a granite works, and the Poor Clares Convent as well as the various residences.

THE OVER The Edge readings will begin 2011 - it’s eight year in existence - with readings from Michael Coady, Dani Gill, and Sarah Griffin, next week.

DRIFTING UNDER The Moon, published by Dedalus Press, is the second book by Westport’s Ger Reidy. Unlike most poets, Reidy has a proper job – he is a civil engineer with the Mayo County Council.
